BIPOLAR DISORDER

Bipolar Disorder is characterised by major fluctuations in mood and energy and is a chronic mental condition. While we all suffer from mood swings now and then, people who suffer from bipolar disorder, experience extreme moods that range from high – euphoric or manic states to very low – depressive states.

Did you know that one in 50 (1.8%) adults in Australia experience bipolar disorder each year? At Astoria Clinic, we provide Bipolar Disorder help to our clients by assisting them to identify the symptoms and triggers of their bipolar disorder.

Symptoms of a manic state:

• Increased energy
• Increased spending
• Increased sex drive
• Little to no sleep
• Highly irritable
• Overactivity
• Speaking very fast
• Racing thoughts and lack of concentration
• Grandiose ideas
• Hallucinations and/or delusions
• Aggressive and impatient

Symptoms of a depressive state:

• Suicidal thoughts
• Low self-esteem
• Lack of motivation
• Low mood
• Irritability
• Lack of or change in appetite
• Sleeping more than usual
• Withdrawal from family and friends
• Loss of energy
• Low interest levels in usually pleasurable and enjoyed activities
• Extreme sadness or feelings of hopelessness

If you, or someone you know, exhibits any of these symptoms, it is important to seek help from a GP so that you can be referred on to a Psychologist, Psychiatrist or other mental health professional.

Bipolar disorder is not a condition that just goes away. A combination of genetics, external environment, chemistry or altered brain structure may play a role in the disorder, so it is important to seek help or bipolar treatment so that a long-term management strategy can be put in place to control the condition and mood swings.
